Memorie da sottopelle. Laboratorio di coreo/grafie decoloniali

The month of September kicked off with the workshop titled Memorie da Sottopelle. Laboratorio di Coreo/grafie Decoloniali curated by Marie Moïse and Mackda Ghebremariam Tesfau’. The event was hosted at Teatro India on Sept. 7, 2023, as part of the collaboration between If Body 2023 and Short Theatre, a multidisciplinary festival that has rejigged the signs pointing to the changing landscape of national and international live entertainment in Rome since 2006.

Memorie da Sottopelle originated within the project Decolonizzare il Sapere. Pratiche di Femminismo Antirazzista stems from an idea of the two researchers, activists, and translators of the book Plantation Memories: Episodes of Everyday Racism by Grada Kilomba (Capovolte 2021). During this transformative journey, Marie Moïse and Mackda Ghebremariam Tesfau’ guided the participants through a collective practice of theoretical and performative reworking, delving into the embodied experience of relations of supremacy and coloniality. Through the words of racialized women authors published by the publishing house Capovolte, Grada Kilomba, Djamila Ribeiro, Rahma Nur, Carla Akotirene and through their genealogies intertwined with other female thinkers and poets, the words and concepts of decolonial feminism were shaped into verse, movement and contact. A new collective consciousness came to life from feminist power, liberation, healing, and re-articulation of defense mechanisms.
